Having worked on the manufacturing side of the hearing aid industry for the past five years, 37-year-old Chris Murphy developed a deep passion for hearing support and its life-changing impact on people's lives.

This interest sparked his desire to return to higher education to gain a formal audiology qualification so that he could continue making a meaningful difference – and ÎÞÂëȺ½»â€™s great reputation for healthcare education inspired Chris to embark upon its Hearing Aid Audiology Diploma, which he would complete while continuing to work full-time in Ireland.

One year into the degree, Chris tells us about his ÎÞÂëȺ½» experience so far.

Why did you decide to return to higher education?

Over the past five years, my role in the audiology industry and my personal experiences—particularly seeing how hearing aids have improved the lives of family members—have really strengthened my passion for this field. I’ve now decided to return to higher education to gain a formal qualification and expand my skillset, with the goal of becoming a fully qualified Hearing Aid Audiologist and continuing to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. While working on the manufacturing side of the audiology industry, I also completed some introductory courses in audiology, which sparked my interest even further.

How are you finding it managing your full-time job alongside studying the Diploma?

I’m currently working full-time with an Irish Independent Audiology Clinic while studying part-time at ÎÞÂëȺ½». It’s definitely a balancing act, but the course is well-structured, with clear delivery and realistic deadlines, so I’ve found it manageable. Good time management and support from the university make a big difference.

Why did you choose to study this course at ÎÞÂëȺ½»?

ÎÞÂëȺ½» has a great reputation for healthcare education, and this course stood out for its blend of academic learning and hands-on practical experience. The ease of travel to Edinburgh from Ireland also made it very accessible. I love the city—it’s vibrant, friendly, and the transport links from the airport to the university are fantastic, whether by bus, tram or train.

What interested you about your course?

I was really drawn to the depth and breadth of the course content. It’s fascinating how much there is to learn, from the science of hearing to the technology and fitting of hearing aids. The practical elements have been especially engaging.

What do you most enjoy about your course?

The hands-on practical sessions are a highlight. Being able to apply what we learn in theory to real-life situations is both rewarding and confidence-building. Also, the sense of community among students and support from lecturers has been great. Edinburgh is lovely to spend time in too, we are never stuck for options for evening activities while on the practical blocks of the course.

How do your lecturers support your learning?

The lecturers are very approachable and always willing to offer guidance, whether it’s in person during sessions or via email between teaching blocks. They understand that many of us are working while studying and are flexible and supportive in helping us stay on track.

What do you hope to do with your degree upon graduating?

My goal is to become a fully qualified Hearing Aid Audiologist and continue working directly with clients, helping them improve their hearing and overall quality of life. I’m also interested in continuing professional development and perhaps exploring further qualifications down the line.

What advice do you have for any potential students looking to complete the Diploma?

If you're passionate about helping people and are interested in the science and care behind hearing health, this is a fantastic course. Be prepared to commit time and stay organised, especially if you're working full-time, but know that the support is there and it’s absolutely worth it. The blend of theory and practice is excellent, and studying in Edinburgh is a bonus—it’s such a welcoming and accessible city.
